International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day is celebrated every year on March 8th to celebrate the socioeconomic, cultural, and political achievements of women worldwide. It is also a day to raise awareness for the continued fight for gender equality. In 2021, 41% of our participants identified as female, non-binary or transgender, and we continue to strive for gender parity in our programs to work towards closing the gender wage gap.

We couldn’t think of a better way to commemorate International Women’s Day this year than to shine the spotlight on newly appointed NPower Canada Alumni Advisory Council Chair, Glory Ogor. As Council Chair, Glory oversees and leads members of the Advisory Council, who work together to provide job seeker direction and input into NPower Canada’s programs.

Glory, in her bid to build her professional career having newly migrated to Canada from Nigeria, applied for many jobs but did not receive a single call back due to her lack of Canadian experience. That’s when Glory heard about NPower Canada from one of our alumni.

From the get-go, Glory thrived in the program. She acquired in-demand tech skills and certifications and strengthened her communication, public speaking and leadership skills. Her growth was noticeable to all, and she was selected to be the graduate speaker for her cohort in March 2018. In her speech, she shared that she had landed her first job in Canada a few weeks prior, as a Quality Assurance Analyst with CIBC.

That marked the start of a three year career with CIBC. While both tech and finance are male-dominated industries, Glory was determined to have a fruitful and successful career so that she could support her family.

Glory wanted to give back to the organization that had helped her start her career in Canada, and joined NPower Canada’s Alumni Advisory Council in 2019. As a council member, she was able to provide feedback based on her experience, connect with like-minded alumni, and continue to refine her leadership skills.

Glory now works at Scotiabank as a Senior Business Systems Analyst, and in November 2021, submitted her application to be the new Chair of our Alumni Advisory Council. We were confident she was the right person for the role. It has been a pleasure to work with Glory over the years and watch her grow into the strong, confident, and successful woman she is today.
