Before I started the NPower Canada program I was new to Canada. I have a degree in information technology from the Philippines so when I arrived in Canada I started looking for IT jobs but as a newcomer it was very difficult. I had no connections, no interview skills, no personal development and no friends to turn to for support. I would talk to my friends back home and here about the IT jobs they were getting while I was working a minimum wage job, coming home with ripped, dirty clothes from a hot welding metal plate at work. I felt discouraged and stuck. I was feeling really down, I remember a time on the bus when I was ready to quit. That’s when I found a summer program for youth at the YMCA that lead me to NPower Canada and my whole life changed.
I loved my time in class because everyone was so positive. Even though the class was just four hours a day I would commute on the bus with my classmates and we would talk about NPower stuff and discuss how to be successful. We would talk about group studying and how to lift people up who were struggling. It would take an hour and half each way to get to class but I honestly miss my commute because of the people I got to spend time with.
Every aspect of NPower Canada’s holistic program was important for me. The professional development and mock interview practice really helped me during my job interviews. I improved my english speaking skills and grammar. To other people my english seemed fine but I was determined to improve to be able to convey more complex thoughts. I was self conscious about speaking in front of people but I decided to tackle this problem head by doing a presentation in front of the whole class.
NPower Canada staff gave me the opportunity to learn and grow, and provided me with the tools to succeed in the work environment. Thanks to the guidance, support, and motivation I received each and every day at NPower Canada I was able to successfully land a job doing Quality Assurance for CIBC.
NPower Canada helped mold me into who I am today and I will be forever grateful.
