BHM Success Story: Dornel Phillips

Dornel– Ontario – Senior Technology Infrastructure Analyst at RBC – 2025

“To date, the accomplishment I’m most proud of during my time with NPower Canada is being the first student ever accepted into the program” Dornel exclaimed! As a graduate from NPower Canada’s very first cohort, he has come a long way since starting the program in 2014. Currently, the Senior Technology Infrastructure Analyst at RBC – Dornel’s journey is an inspirational story of determination, growth, success.

When Dornel first joined NPower Canada, he was part of the first cohort, which meant that everything was still in its early stages. He knew that if he could succeed, he’d be paving the way for future participants. And succeed he did! Even though the program was still growing, Dornel knew that now was the chance to dive in and gain hands-on skills in the tech industry.

The Junior IT Analyst program gave Dornel the technical skills and the real-world experience he needed to launch his career. “The practical knowledge I gained through the co-op opportunities was invaluable,” he shared. “It was not just about learning technical concepts; it was about how to apply them in a professional setting.”

After he completed his CompTIA A+ certification in 2014, Dornel started working at RBC, as a Capital Markets Helpdesk agent. However, he moved up pretty quickly, from team lead to management, where he’s now been for the past two years.

Looking back, Dornel describes much of his success to NPower Canada’s hands-on skills, networking, and mentorship. He notes that, “Today, NPower Canada has blossomed into something far bigger, helping countless people across the country.” As an alumnus, Dornel shares that “through the co-op and networking opportunities, I was able to make invaluable connections, which led to my current role at RBC.”
