BHM Success Story: Naser Ibrahim

Abdoalnaser Ibrahim – Ontario – Freelance Data Analyst – 2025

Abdoalnaser’s story is one of resilience in the face of adversity. Growing up in Darfur, Sudan, he was caught in the devastating genocide at the age of seven, losing his father and being forced to flee his home. His family spent years in a UN IDP camp, but despite the hardships, Abdoalnaser remained determined to pursue an education. He became the top student in his area and later earned a degree in engineering, proving that his ambition would not be defined by his circumstances.

In 2022, Abdoalnaser had the opportunity to speak at the United Nations General Assembly about the revolution in Sudan. However, this momentous occasion came with a difficult consequence—he could no longer return home. With the help of the United Nations Youth Delegate program, Abdoalnaser applied for refugee status in Canada. Upon arriving, he was met with the harsh reality of living in a shelter and struggling to find work, despite his qualifications and experience. It was during this uncertain time that he found NPower Canada’s and a path forward.

In January 2024, Abdoalnaser joined NPower Canada’s Junior Data Analyst Program. Although it was a challenge to work through the program while living in a shelter and dealing with the ongoing crisis in Sudan, the support he received was invaluable. The technical training in data analysis, SQL, and Excel gave him the skills he needed, but it was the guidance and encouragement from NPower Canada’s staff that truly made the difference. “…Beyond the technical side, NPower Canda offered something just as valuable — a supportive community.” With mentorship and career coaching, he regained the confidence he had lost and learned how to present his skills and experiences to employers.

Today, Abdoalnaser is moving forward with confidence and purpose. After completing the program, he secured a summer job with NPower Canada’s Data and Reporting department, marking a major milestone in his career. He has since worked on several meaningful projects and has moved out of the shelter. Abdoalnaser is now focused on advancing in data analytics and hopes to one day mentor others who have faced similar challenges. He is deeply grateful to NPower Canada and its partners for giving him the opportunity to rebuild his life and rewrite his story.
