Steven B. – British Columbia- UX Design- September 2022 Graduation
Steven was struggling to find a job that he loved. He relied on support from his family and income assistance, but was hopeful he would land on his feet soon.
“I was struggling with mental health issues, social isolation, and underemployment, which made it difficult for me to find suitable work that would lead to career growth,” Steven shared.
When WorkBC told Steven about the tech programs NPower Canada offers, he was excited by the opportunity. He was interested in a career in the design industry and couldn’t believe that the program was offered at no cost. Steven enrolled in our UX Design program and quickly found a supportive community of like-minded peers. He found himself working harder than before, motivated and excited by the possibility of a career in tech.
“My work habits and daily routine radically shifted, and my professional network expanded, putting me in a much better position by the end of the program to apply for positions that would lead to career growth,” Steven said.
Steven felt confident applying to jobs as the program came to an end. He was able to land a role with Mosaic as an e-commerce advisor, and to continue to practice his design skills, started volunteering as a UX designer for a non-profit organization. He knows this is but the first step in his dream to be a UX designer working on augmented reality interfaces.
When asked what advice he would give to job-seekers considering the program, here’s what Steven had to say:
“Don’t underestimate how much you can get out of this program. If you put in the time and effort, and leave yourself open to make connections, the program can radically shift your trajectory and put you on a path that seemed out of reach merely months before.”
