Phillip T. – Alberta – Junior Data Analyst – 2023 Graduate
Suddenly, at the age of 54, Phillip found himself needing to switch careers. In spring of 2021, Phillip developed an arterial venous fistula wrapped around his spinal cord and required emergency surgery. He tried to continue his job as a Chef de Partie, but after a couple of years, his body couldn’t go on due to nerve damage and mobility issues. Phillip felt demoralized and considered his options.
Phillip contacted Aboriginal Futures to speak with a career counsellor. After hearing that Phillip had a passion for and experience in tech, the counsellor suggested he take a look at NPower Canada. “With my physical limitations, pivoting back to IT seemed a no-brainer. Unfortunately, my resume didn’t reflect the amount of experience I had,” said Phillip.
Phillip enrolled in our Junior Data Analyst program, and as a “proud Cree from Slave Lake”, began the program through our Indigenous Tech Pathways. “It began with a ceremonial prayer and sharing circle. We also had informative talks with past graduates of NPower Canada, and made mini teepees, which was cool!” shared Phillip.
Phillip enjoyed his time during the program, benefiting from hands-on lessons and learning from his peers. “This was the first time I attended a program with such a diverse assemblage of people. It was a great experience to be a part of. NPower Canada’s inclusiveness is so encouraging and welcome,” shared Phillip.
Phillip recently graduated from the program, and already has received a great deal of interest from employers. “Having the NPower Canada alumni support will be beneficial as I progress towards my new future. The IT industry is always fluctuating, but with the confidence NPower Canada has helped me find, I’ll be able to adjust and succeed.”
We are so excited to see where Phillip’s journey takes him, and to support him in this new phase. To those considering NPower Canada’s programs, here’s Phillip’s advice:
“My advice to anyone considering the NPower Canada program is to find your true ‘why?’, stay committed, make adjustments if you need to, and you’ll find that determination, sprinkled with positivity that can propel you to new heights.”
