Elena M. – Alberta – Junior Data Analyst & Google Project Management- December 2021 Graduate
When Elena was younger, her mother came to Canada from the Philippines to find work as a nurse, and to make a better life for herself and her family. Elena studied at the University of Calgary in Natural Sciences. She graduated during the pandemic, and quickly realized her degree would only take her so far. She needed to stand out from the competition. Having two sisters already with careers in tech, this sparked Elena’s passion for the field, and she was eager to join them.
Elena joined our Junior Data Analyst program in 2021 after one of her sisters heard about NPower Canada. “NPower Canada gave me the initial push I needed to develop skills needed in the tech industry and the background knowledge to be a desirable and competitive applicant,” Elena said.
Just a couple of weeks after graduating from the program, Elena secured her first tech role with Envirosoft Corporation, where she was able to use the skills she developed during the program. She said that her SQL knowledge in particular helped her to stand out, “it helped me find efficiencies in my current position’s processes which has impressed my manager,” she said. She was also able to join a committee in improving the project management process with things she learned in the Google project management program.
Looking towards the future, Elena wants to continue to upskill and develop, and see where her new career can take her. She encourages others to apply to NPower Canada, as having it on your resume can help you land a role. “Taking the program shows initiative and tells employers you are ready and willing to learn new things,” Elena shared.
